Talking Tactics Ep 03: Be remarkable
If we want our audience to take note of us and reflect on our Talk long after we’ve left the stage, we must strive to be extraordinary in every way. The more unexpected we are, the more remarkable we can become.
I'm at a Remote MasterMind event and I'm ready to learn. I'm so excited to meet everyone else who is coming to this event. And this one person walks up to me and says, "Hi. I remember you from two years ago." And I'm thinking, "Uh-oh, what did I do? What did I say? How did I screw up? Why does this person remember me?" And all these thoughts are just clouding my mind. And she says, "No. I actually... I remember your story. You told a story on stage about two years ago and I still remember it to this day and it had an incredible impact on my life."
Isn't that incredible? When we are willing, as speakers, to get up and stand up in front of crowds and share something that matters deeply to us, it can affect the lives of those around us. And oftentimes, we never meet those people. If I hadn't been with her at this particular event, I might have never, ever heard from her again and never known that my story had an impact on her life.
We have an opportunity, as speakers, to be remarkable, in every situation. At this event that I spoke at, I was not the keynote. I was not a featured speaker. I just got up and shared a story. I think I was up there maybe four minutes - tops - that's it. And she still remembered that. When I work with people all over the world, I hear these similar stories again and again and again. They speak somewhere. They never interact with their audience and then years later, they get that email. They get that phone call. They run into that person again and that story had an impact on their life. As a speaker, you have an opportunity to up your game and be remarkable every chance you get, because when you do this is what can stick in people's minds and effect change across the globe.
The next time you have an opportunity to stand up and share your story, share an idea, share a point of view, do it. Because you can be remarkable in that moment, just by sharing something that matters deeply to you. And who knows? You may affect change in someone's life that you never, ever meet. But that's okay, because you are changing lives, one person at a time.
