Major Mistakes Ep 07: The Mindset

You've got to be okay with being vulnerable up there and sharing what your topic really means to you.

Takeaways What Not to Do:

  • All in your head

Stay out of your head. What you think is going on with your audience is not necessarily what's actually going on with your audience.

  • Scanning and not connecting

Don't scan the audience without making a connection. Find one person and talk to them. Find another person and talk to them. Rinse, repeat.

  • Thinking the audience hates you

The audience does NOT hate you. They want you to be great. Chances are they could never do what you are doing and they are rooting for you.

The audience doesn't hate you. They love you. They want you to succeed. They really are there for you. And they want to see you be amazing and teach them something. So, give them your best and speak from the heart.Kymberlee

You are giving your next talk and you're in the middle of the talk and you're thinking, "Oh what is that line three paragraphs from now? I can't forget that line." And, "Oh, this has to be perfect, the stakes are so high with this talk. I can't screw it up. What if I screw it up?" Or you are scanning the audience thinking, "Okay, I need to just sort of generally catch everybody's eye from side to side and make sure I get everybody's attention, never landing on one person." Or you're thinking, "The audience hates me. The audience actually hates me. They hate what I'm saying, they're not connecting. They hate this, they're gonna stand up and leave. Why am I doing this?" You're all in your head.

Don't do this.

These are some of the mistakes that I see speakers making right in the middle of the talk. First of all, get out of your head. The audience is where you want to place your focus. Not on what is my next line that I need to remember. Your answers are out within the audience. And don't scan. Please don't scan to try to connect with everybody. Find a person. Connect with one person, deliver a couple lines, find another person. Deliver a couple lines.

And, look. The audience doesn't hate you. They love you. They want you to succeed. They really are there for you. And they want to see you be amazing and teach them something. So, give them your best and speak from the heart. You'll hear me say this again and again, you've got to be okay with being vulnerable up there and sharing what this topic really means to you. And when you do that, you're gonna be amazing on stage with your mindset.
