Rehearsal Rituals Ep 02: How Long and Often to Practice

If you want to be an outstanding speaker and if you want to own the stage, practicing needs to be part of your routine.

Takeaways

  • Practice Ritual

Develop a pratice routine that you do every day.

  • 20 Minutes

You can work on one aspect of your talk for 20 minutes every day. Everybody’s got 20 minutes.

  • Run the whole talk

If you do have a talk coming up, you need to run through the entire talk at least seven times in the days leading up to the event.

You should develop a practice ritual that you do every day. It needs to be just like brushing your teeth.Kymberlee

I get asked a lot, “Kymberlee, how often do I really have to practice and how long should my practices be?

It depends on when your next talk is. Let’s say you don’t have a talk scheduled at all. You should develop a practice ritual that you do every day. If you want to be an outstanding speaker and if you want to own the stage, practicing needs to be part of your routine. It needs to be just like brushing your teeth. Now, I’m not talking about five hours of practice unless you need to do that for a talk you have coming up but maybe it’s just 20 minutes. Twenty minutes a day, you’re working on your talk, some aspect of your talk. It might be your story, your opening, your closing, the transitions. Pick an area of your talk and you can work on a different one every single day.

As far as how often: when I get close to a talk coming up, I make sure that I run the whole talk from beginning all the way to the end seven times, so all back out seven days before the event, I’ll make sure that I’m doing that talk seven times. Maybe it’s three times each day for seven days. Maybe it’s one time every day for seven days but that’s what I’m going for because I want to make sure that I am at my best on that stage.
