Rehearsal Rituals Ep 03: Practice Planning

Do you even need to plan for your practice? Yes, you do. Otherwise, it probably won’t happen.

Takeaways

  • Schedule your practice

Put it in your calendar and make your practice time a habit.

  • Know the What

As you’re scheduling your practice time, determine which aspect of your talk you’ll be praticing on. This saves a lot of time and thinking as your practice time begins.

  • Post-it Notes

Use sticky notes to help outline your talk instead of reading from your script.

I plan my practice every day. I put it in my calendar. Not only that, I plan how long I’m going to do it and what I’m going to practice the night before. I don’t even have to think about it the next day.Kymberlee

If you hope that you practice, chances are you won’t. What I’ve found is that I plan my practice every day. I put it in my calendar. Not only that, I plan how long I’m going to do it and what I’m going to practice the night before. I don’t even have to think about it the next day. I might practice my opening story, and the night before I know what it is, I’ve got my script, I’ve got everything ready to go. The next day, when it’s time for me to practice, all I do is grab my script and go.

Another thing you can do that I’ve found to be very helpful is to, once you have your talk written from start to finish, dissect your talk and take sticky notes and put sticky notes on a window, a mirror in your bathroom. Create the outline of your talk in sticky note form. This allows you to just glance at the highlights.

In your practice you can see the outline right before you and it will really help you remember what comes after what, what the flow is, where you want to emphasize things. When you put your sticky notes on your mirror, put them in outline form so that you know what are the main topics and what are the subtopics. That’s going to help your practice a lot.
