Rehearsal Rituals Ep 04: Practice with Audience

Practicing in a vacuum will only get you so far. At some point you'll need to get some real-world feedback.

  • No audience at first

Practicing alone allows you to play with all sorts of movement ideas that might feel silly and we don't want that.

  • Seek an audience later

Your audience's responses can offer valuable feedback.

  • Lock it down

At some point you're going to need to lock your content down and make no further changes, focusing instead on improving your delivery of that content.

Should you practice with an audience, or not? Well, there are advantages and disadvantages to both, and here's the thing: If you don't have an audience... that's great, because then you can do the crazy stuff with your body, and your hands, and try out different things, so I recommend doing that absolutely. My cats know my stories well.

On the other hand, it's good to have an audience. It's good to have things you can bounce off of a human. You can tell by their body language whether they're getting it, they're confused, they're bored, or they're riveted and they can't wait to hear what you say next.

What I would recommend though is about two weeks before any talk you're going to have locked the content down, and don't allow your audience to suggest changes, because it's too late. You don't want to make changes at that point. You can have them give you feedback on your movement, on your performance. If you do that and practice both ways, sometimes with an audience, sometimes without an audience, then you will have the full range. Then you can nail your talk on stage, even more.
