Rehearsal Rituals Ep 06: How Do You Practice?

Make it an adventure out of your practice. Then it won’t seem like a chore.

Takeaways

  • Vary your approach

Add variety to your practice methods and your talk grows stronger.

  • Move that body!

Nobody wants to see a statue delivery a monolog from the stage. Engage the audience through movement.

  • Change up the speed

Practice your talk at a speed that’s faster than normal. Then do the same thing slower than normal. Interesting things show up in this exercise.

First of all, stand up. Do not practice your talks sitting down unless you’re going to give your talk sitting down. Move. Kymberlee

How do you practice? Do you read your script and then you’re good? Do you ad lib and kind of hope that it goes well? There are a lot of different ways that you can use to practice. Here’s a couple that I’ve found effective:

First of all, stand up. Do not practice your talks sitting down unless you’re going to give your talk sitting down. You want to make it as authentic as you can to the stage. Move. Even if have your script in your hand while you’re memorizing your talk, let one of your arms to gestures and move around the strange.

Also, I like to do my talk in different variations. I’ll do an entire talk that I’ve already written from start to finish as fast as I can. And then I’ll do it again as slow as I can. The different ways you do it will inform the talk. You’re not obviously going to get on stage and do it as slow as you can. Just that exercise may inform a sentence or a word in your final delivery of the talk.

I would say, have fun with it. Make practice fun. Make it an adventure out of your practice. Then it won’t seem like a chore.
